Getting Married in Style at The Lace Factory

Let’s say you arrive via the Essex Steam Train in their historic Pullman Coach. Your day couldn’t be better! After that you have your choice of ceremony sites, and access to the loveliest vintage getting ready space. When your reception begins, it’s in the their main ballroom. Picture: wood floors, high ceilings with gorgeous draping and a chance to incorporate greenery and florals if you would like, and huge windows that allow so much natural light in. It’s a dream; elevated elegance and elements of whimsy.

The Lace Factory gets some of it’s charm from its history as a working factory. It has been a key piece of Deep River’s history since it’s inception and use as a bustling shipyard in the late 1800’s. It was later developed for use as a lace factory, until the late 1900’s when the business closed and sat vacant until it found its current function, as a unique Connecticut wedding venue. Now you can have your dream day, along with the use of the train if you’d like to add it!

The Lace Factory partners with the historic Essex Steam Train so your guests can arrive in style. It’s truly a one of a kind experience.

Finding a Photographer for the Lace Factory

From a photographer’s standpoint, the Lace Factory is a little bit of a dream. The main reception space has these huge windows that let in a really beautiful soft natural light for most of the day. This light is perfect for getting ready, and early first dances when the sun is setting late. You can also find some really great patches of harsh or dappled light to make things more interesting and dramatic!

As the sun is setting you can go outside fro some warm glowly sun-drenched portraits. Once the sun sets, it sets the stage for flash; both on and off camera. What does that actually mean, Catherine?! It means that you need to find a photographer who knows how to work in low light situations.

Whether you want vivid and high contrast images that are sharp and intentional, warm romantics images that are exposed just right, or bright vibey pop of direct flash vibes of everyone getting down on the dance floor, you need someone who knows how to achieve that and ensures you will end up thrilled with your final images from your reception. You can always ask photographers that you are inquiring with “can we see a full gallery?” or “could you show us a few examples of your work in low-light reception venues?”. Photographers with experience in low-light venues like the Lace Factory (i.e. The Society Room) will be happy to showcase this for you!

I lean toward romantic, well exposed but still vivid moments with a few softer feeling moody romantic low light moments incorporated. Importantly, this also means that if you’re feeling up to it, we can sneak outside for just five to ten minutes to give you two a chance to be (almost) alone for a moment and just soak the day in while my team ensures we capture a few night portraits! This could be a simple moment with a little bit of dramatic lighting or it incorporate a variety of funky and fun techniques depending on your unique vibe!

Final Thoughts about selecting your wedding venue

The Lace Factory does a great job of hitting that sweet spot between unique and elevated. At it’s heart it has an industrial and vintage vibe, but with the right planner or designer it can be sculpted with decor to lean a bit more modern, whimsical, or even boho. Ultimately, you can leave it exactly as it is, and will sing on its own. The space supports either really well.

If you care about guest experience and want to incorporate unique elements like the train ride, or you want a variety of backdrops without bouncing between locations this should be a top contender on your list.

Finally, from a flow standpoint, one of the things that draws couples in, is that it’s a full service venue from getting ready, to ceremony to cocktail hour and reception. Once your guests are there, they don’t need to leave until the night is over. Less logistics equal less stress! If you’re someone who values photography (yes, hi! I see you!), this venue gives you so much to work with especially when the gardens are in season, manicured and blooming beautifully.

Overall, the Lace factory is perfect for couples who want a wedding that feels a little different, with room to still make it feel exactly like them without sacrificing visual quality, comfort or guest experience!

If you are dreaming of a wedding just like this, and you want someone who will ensure you feel comfortable in front of the camera and document it all in an honest creative way, I’m here for that! You can inquire here!
